They are over 73 years old. And is how long ex President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn were married – making them the longest presidential couple. The Carter Center celebrated the milestone Thursday, when the couple surpassed the record held by the George H.W. deceased bush and Barbara Bush.
And to think it could have been different.
When Jimmy Carter first proposed, Rosalynn Smith – as she was known at the time – rejected him. Why? He had promised his dying father that he would finish college first.
As she recounted in her memoir, "First Lady of the Plains," the couple grew up three years and five kilometers apart.
There were no girls in town about her age. Then Rosalynn became best friends with Jimmy's younger sister.
"I thought he was the most handsome young man I ever saw," she wrote in her memoirs.
Her father died when she was 12 years old. But she kept her promise. She graduated from Georgia Southwestern College.
The couple left on their first date in 1945. They were married the following year.
He was 21 years old. She was 18 years old.
"The best thing I did was marry Rosalynn" Carter once said. "This is a pinnacle in my life."
This is not to say that it was easy to navigate all the time. Enjoy the time the couple decided to write a book together.
"It's the worst problem we've had since we got married" Jimmy Carter said jokingly to CNN at the time.
"It would be as if God had given her this text on Mount Sinai and she had brought it and presented it to me in stone."
He now has 95. She is 92 years old. And their love story is still strong.
FIX: An earlier version of this article said that the Carters have been married for over 75 years. They have been married for over 73 years.
