"This morning, he dug a nice hole in the yard and decided to stay in it," he added.
Tomlinson, who runs Hillock Golden Retrievers in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, he said it was "a wonderful feeling" to hear the audience sing Daniel's name.
But, she said, "it was Siba's night. She is a beautiful and beautiful representation of her race."
The decision was the judge's preference, she said.
"Another night with a different judge," she said, "the outcome would be totally different."
Siba is the fifth standard poodle to receive Westminster's top honor and the first since 1991. In almost a century and a half, a golden retriever has never received the award from the judges.
Could the breed be very common? Golden retrievers, along with Labradors, German shepherds, French bulldogs and bulldogs, are among the most popular breeds, according to the American Kennel Club, but no labrador, golden retriever or French bulldog has ever won the best on the show.
Or maybe pretty much? Golden retrievers can be called Brad Pitt dogs, with silky blond hair and friendly eyes. Pitt took decades to be recognized with an Oscar for his performance.
Representatives for the Westminster Kennel Club were not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Tomlinson, who has four decades of experience in creating and exhibiting golden retrievers, has had no response.
